Do lyrics and/or vocals frequently ruin songs?

    Just like the title says.

Does anyone else think that songs are frequently ruined by lyrics and/or the vocals?

Dream Theater's whole catalog is ruined by LaBrie.

As much as I enjoy Les Claypool and Primus, I can't stand his vocals. Would've been nice if they were a strictly instrumental band.

    oh,

and ALL the cookie-monster gargle-allists (can't call 'em singers, even if they sing on some parts of a song) – so much cool music made unlistenable.

Hmmm the list could get long, I'll just stop here.

I'd say the reverse is possible too where the voice is the only thing that carries a tune.

But yeah a ton of metal is ruined for me by the screaming voices. I mean, why can't you be melodic?

I've recently been exposed to some bands where one song was great. Then when I go into the back catalog the rest of the songs may have great music but oi the voice....

Here's a twist answer to the OP's question:

I know I'm going to get killed for liking Linkin Park (in fairness, for me no other band is as all over the map---I love some of it, hate some of it, some of it is meh). But "Guilty All The Same" would be an amazing song for me if they took out the rap verse by Rakim. I had not heard of him before, so I was a little surprised to find out he's a pretty well-respected rapper. But the verse completely ruins the flow of the song, I don't totally get his "flow" or lyrics, and it shifts the meaning of the song from something very personal that I connect with to something pretty political that makes me go ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I am not familiar with the works of Linking Park, but hating on Rakim is a flaming hot take.

No hating really, though, because I can't judge his larger body of work and I'm not really a connoisseur of the raps anyway. BUT for me it just does not work in that song the way I think both parties think it does.

From what I've read about this Linking Park, it appears that their musical stylings owe quite a bit to Rakim.

My experience with them is pretty much Hybrid Theory and Meteora... after that I kinda fell away from them.

Along those lines I think Morello's solo's ruin almost every Audioslave song. :sour:

Their music is very cyclical. They went in some very different directions after their initial stuff, then cycled back to that sound for a few albums, now they're kind of off it again.
