Depends on what tone I'm looking for and what gear I'm using. If I'm doing the old-school thing with, say, my SVP-Pro then my clip light might stay on all the time. With other preamps and cleaner tones it's better to have the clip light flash occasionally or not at all. I never clip my power amp, though.
I have never seen my power amp clip, but my rig was chosen and set up to give me plenty of clean headroom.
My pre doesn't have a clip light, but I'm pretty sure it has never clipped as well. The highest setting I've played with it is with the volume at about 2:00 and I play with a fairly light touch 95% of the time and never really bang on my bass (when I play with a pick, I cut the basses vol. control probably about 50%).
Clip lights frighten the crap out of me.
