So, I am curious: do you own a bass that is perfect in every way to you? I really mean, you would change absolutely nothing on it. This would include, shape, weight, scale length, pickups, electronics, colour, woods used, string spacing, neck radius, fingerboard dots and side dots, etc...

If you do own your perfect bass, what is it and did it take you a long time to find it? Did you have to custom order to get it? Pictures welcome and encouraged!

If you don't own your perfect bass, what are things that you would change to make it a perfect bass?

For the intents of purposes of this discussion, the perfect bass for you, including warts and all is not part of the discussion (meaning, not a bass that you've come to accept its shortcomings).
I feel like a I do. I have a Modulus VJ w/ EMG's & a Chechen fingerboard/gloss finish and a Spector Euro LX4 matte black stain w/ EMG's.

I'm quite happy with my fretless Mustang, but would trade up to something with better balance if I was looking for a new electric. And then it would have to be perfect --tone, wood, finish, everything.

But as it stands, it'll probably get me through the rest of my career. And if there are bassists or guitarists in the audience, they always ask me about it.

So far, this is the one. It has a slightly dark tone to it even with bright nps strings, which i really like. 8lbs on the nose, zero neck dive, and the American Professional neck feels just right to me. Looking forward to the nitro finish to wear and age naturally over my lifetime. The ONLY thing I did was remove the tugbar, as it just isn't needed.

I love all of my basses, but they are not all perfect. Highlights of my imperfect basses include a 1990 US Gibson Thunderbird, a pair of fretted and fretless five string Hamer Cruise basses from 1996, a 2005 Fender American Vintage '57 Precision, a 2007 Rickenbacker 4003, a 2007 Lakland Hollowbody with a pair of Darkstar pickups, a 2022 Serek Grand, a 2024 Serek Metropolis, etc.

As far as perfect basses. This is what I've got:

This is my perfect P bass. Lightweight (8.0 lbs), resonant, a great sounding Fralin pickup, oiled neck, shielded, worn in to perfection.

2. 2023 American Professional II Jazz Bass

As far as production jazz basses go, this one is pretty solid all around. That said, it needed a little fine tuning of the fretwork and shielding before I was ready to call this perfect. It is perfect now.

3. 2023 Serek Sacramento

Everything about this 32" scale, chambered bass is perfect. I love the Serek single coils (VVT + series/parallel). The rounded body top and bounded back look and feel great. It is everything my Ric is not.

4. 2024 Serek Midwestern

This short scale beauty is perfection. The B90 pickup (with a switchable dummy coil) is perfect for a nice set of broke in flats. It's comfortable and inspiring to play.

I've always been a Jazz guy .... 55 years. Played other basses along the way, but a well made and setup Jazz does it for me.
My "perfect" bass is my 17 year old Lull M4V. I worked directly with Mike for the original build. Nothin' super fancy, just a well built and well set-up Jazz!

... and next to it is my next favorite and also perfect bass .... Fender Roscoe Beck IV.

Is it a $3000 custom shop? No. Is it a crazy vintage 1958 Precision? No. Do I care? Nope.

I love my Player Precision to death. My ride or die bass. 2018 model that had a sunburst body that I swapped to a polar white body. Only thing original about the bass is the neck and tuners lol! Even the mounting screwed were changed!

Does it matter? Nah. Does it play fantastic and sound like a monster? Yes!

Everyone has their perfect bass, until they see the next one!! :)

There is no absolute perfect bass. Of the 11 I own they are all perfect in at least one way.
The player is the real wildcard. Get really good and you can cook on a Squier squire Skwyer...

Yes. About 12 years ago, Andrew Drake of @Drake Custom made a bass on spec with an old mahogany body cut thin, wenge neck and wenge fretboard, EMG pickups (P/J) and pre amp and Hipshot hardware. I bought it as I was getting back into playing after rearing kids and a divorce.

I have a fair number of basses including some custom-made Drakes. Expensive or cheap, They play great.

But every band I've played in LOVES this one. The studio engineers LOVE this one.

It babies my arthritis. It fits my small, old hurting hands perfect and plays so easy that I often play parts I didn't know I played. If my brain thinks it, my hands have done it.

I love the other Drakes and gig them at jams and open mics and in acoustic trios, but there's something rock-n-roll about this one.

When I need to be at my best. I take it.
Studio. Stage. Dancing.
