I find myself doing this on this forum and another one i frequent. I read a post by a user, one that could be humourous.. offensive... childish... anal... etc. I guess the age I believe the user is (say 15) then click on profile and find out. Much to my chagrin I am usually fairly close. I havn't built this habit out of judging a user. I just find it bemusing how the combination of a nickname and one sentance can speak volumes as it seemingly does. Am I the only one who does this? Are you trying to guess my age before clicking my profile button? (I didn't do a poll due to the fact most polls are seemingly frowned upon)
Awww shucks!!! I had you down as 14 years old I was working on the fact that you had lots of short paragraphs that would make sense joined together. There were also a couple of inexplicable blank lines. Working that in with your username, which has a number standing in for a letter for no apparent reason, I made my guess... and was a bit out. Sorry about that! In answer to your question, no, I don't tend to try and guess the age of posters. Instead I try to give everyone the benefit of the doubt and understand what they are saying - not every one has English as their first language and an insatiable appetited for books. Of course, if I recognise a name as someone who frequently posts junk, I might skim the post more quickly... but even there, people change. Wulf
;-) the nickname is a long story (7 years long, and no.. its not influenced by Charles nor Marilyn) I usually space out posts on forums for easier and lighter reading.... some users posts are quite tedious to read due to the lack of extraneous space. and shucks i had you figured at 27 ;-\

Usually if a post has contents along the lines of "my life is over, the girl I truly love deeply with all my heart is cheating on me with some guy that treats her like dirt, whatever will I do." or "Girls suck they make no sense, when will I ever get a girlfriend" I assume mid to early teens immediately. I don't think I've ever been wrong. What makes it worse is when kids the same age try to give advice...
Well I had you down as 162, but I based that purely on your post count Age is just a number to me. All old people say that!
What - you only have 3 dimensions - that is dimensionally-impaired!! Most people inhabit at least 11 dimensions...at the quantum level, that is!! What a flat existence you must lead!
It usually takes: -Username -Supporting/unsupporting status -spelling -signature to figure out who am i dealing with
... and 'who you are dealing with' doesn't necessarily reflect how many years they've been walking this planet. While older sometimes equals wiser, there is no direct correlation I'd go with the factors Dave has mentioned to figure out if it's a post or poster that I'm going to pay much attention to. If it comes from a 12 year old genius with profound maturity, then the content will be valuable and the age irrelevant. Wulf
Well considering i am underweight for my height i i am surprised i take up 3 dimensions... Does occupying your own brain count as a dimension? Merls
OK I keep getting told I look younger than my age, but that's the worst guess yet. Now what did I do with my pacifier?
Hey - that's a great idea - I wonder if Paul could get the software to publish this ratio for every user? So - over time we could decide on what is an acceptable ratio and set a cut-off limit - then people who fall above or below the limit, get banned from posting in OT again until their ratio gets back to an acceptable level!!
Ok - when people behave stupidly, it's pretty easy to guess that they are a 15 year old boy. But what about people who don't say stupid stuff and take time to create posts - look words up in dictionaries etc. etc. Would you be able to tell if they were male or female - would you be able to tell the difference between somebody who was over 18 and legally entitled to do what they liked and a minor who was under the guardianship of their parents? Would you be able to tell the difference between a 18/19 year old and a 12-year old?
I constantly try to guess the age range of anyone that I'm responding to. Not the specific age, just the range. Adult, teeny bopper, ancient (my category) etc. The majority of my posts are made in setup and I have found that most members under the age of 18 to 21 don't have the mechanical skills to follow instructional advice on set up matters. I am not about to suggest to a 12 year old that he/she start cranking on the truss rod. I think that the age range of every member, along with the gender of every member should be required in every users profile. JMHO Pkr2
