I'm guessing all 6str PUs would be weak on the outer poles (or edges if they're blades), but for a custom built bass in a Tele motif is there anything being made today that can handle the neck position string spacing and sports the classic silver cover?

Lace makes this Strat sized guitar pickup. It's design has a comb in it, which acts like a blade, not pole pieces, so it should work fine with any string spacing that is up to as wide as it is.

Oh, kept looking and saw that Lace also makes this Tele pickup. It also has the comb, so it should work for bass, too. It's about $80.

I'm highly opinionated and extremely self-assured
A regular Tele pickup will work just fine. Don’t limit yourself unnecessarily!
