I was flipping thru some old bass player mags the other day and noticed how many pros indorsed these. Back then it was either Ampeg or Hartke. Now, I can't find anyone who sells them. What happened?

I own a Hartke kickback combo, and personally I don't like the sound of it. It's okay for practicing at home, but when I crank the volume a bit, it sounds like mush.

Also, to my ears the midrange sounds odd...almost metallic, I'm thinking it could be something to do with the aluminum cone.

I'm not sure if other people feel the same way, but that's my opinion on Hartke.

Check out Will Lee on the David Letterman show.
  4. Hartke is still used today, by MANY people. The Sam Ash Chain store sells them like crazy. I use the kickback 15 at school jazz ensemble and it rules. Great tone. I own the b120 which is a 120 watt 2x12 combo. It's not great at higher volumes, but it is a combo amp. I'm saving up for a hartke head.

Yes, people still use hartke. Hartke is still being made. Hartke is sold at,,, and many other places. If you can't find hartke anywhere around you, I wouldn't be surprised. I can't find yorkville anywhere, or Eden for that matter. It's all where you live.

OLD BP MAGs? Dude, there are adverstisements and endorsements in the latest issues, there always have been, and there still are. NOTHING happened to hartke other than you who can't find them:D

  5. I use a Hartke 4.5XL. I bought a SWR Triad a few months back but I've since switched back to the 4.5. It's not quite as hi-fi sounding as the Triad, but it's about twice as loud on 1/2 the power.

    Hey darkspec,
I just bought a HA3500 from Sam Ash a couple of months ago and I love it! The high and low contours and the ability to blend tube and ss preamps give it plenty of versatility. And I use a Avatar B115 for practice.Man,that amp really makes the cab come alive.
  9. I've had my 3500 for almost a year...Sounds kickin...Thumpy, throaty, warm...Tonal chameleon...I plan on running it as a preamp when I get a top cabinet and a poweramp....The preamp sounds awesome, but the most power you can get is 350W...The 4000 has a different preamp(parametric EQ) and AFAIK you can't bridge the 5000 or 7000..

That's because Sam Ash owns Hartke. :) Hartke makes some good Cabs. My Favorite has always been the 4.5XL (4x10). I tried the new 2.5XL (2x10) & it also sounds really nice. Personally, I think their heads don't sound as goos as other heads on the market. And their customer service is horribe. I've had a few occasions when I worked @ Sam Ash that I needed a repair & getting in touch with them was HORRIBLE. Let me remind you Samson is a Sam Ash company & it was hard to get warranty service. <img src="">
  11. yes, their service sucks, I know. I had to wait a month for them to replace an input jack that was stepped on. 35$ for shipping too. Those bastards.

KIller sounding...The BEST bang for the buck. IMO...I use a guy's 3500 and Peavey 1-15 cab at practice.
You may think about a used one. Prolly $400.

I had 2 4.5XL cabs and loved them. Traded for an Eden 2-15, thinking I'd get a bigger sound,....... Stupid move..
  14. Hello all,

    I've been playing a Hartke 3500 combo for a year now. This is the old 3500 head w/ a 15" aluminum cone. It has plenty of power- 240w @ 8ohms, 350w @ 4 ohms.
I love the ability to blend the tube and solid state sides of the preamp. I liked the amp more than the speaker, it didn't have enough deffinition, a little woofy. So I got a Genz-Benz 410 xb2 cab.
What a difference, so tight and clean and solid. I can play louder with more control and doesn't compete with the other instruments. Only had the cab about a month now, only rehershed with it so far, but what an improvement.
I just bid on a sansamp rbi @ ebay. I need to do some research on power amps. Anyone have any input on what power amps I should look at?
The cab is rated at 700w @ 8 ohms, so I think I'll be looking at amps around 800 to 1000 watts.
Any help here would be great as I'm only a beginner and don't have any experience with bass power amps!

    I had a 1415 for 6 years and sold it to a mate. I now use a TP4x10 but with a TE V4 head.

I do like the look (and size) of EA cabs but have never got around to changing.

    Hey nojazzloco...

What's wrong with the 410VX? Before Christmas, my local Sam Ash had a wall of them for sale and the one that some kid was abusing sounded pretty good.

    Now they're all gone...sold I suppose.

What don't you like about yours?

I have a hartke 4000 head. I like the sound of it, I just need more power which is why I just got an Ashdown EVO 500. If you want to go 4000 over 3500 send me some mail, thanks :)
