I recently had the good fortune to try out an Epifani PS600 with an Epifani UL2-212 in a nice relaxed, undisturbed, retail setting and it was better than amazing! The low mids had as much articulation as the sweet and present highs IMO. All those years of learning how to fret notes accurately really pays off through this rig as you can hear every nuance of every note! This was pretty much the best amp tone I have ever heard. Obviously the question of "how will the rig sound live though?" is of extreme importance to me. Unfortunately, there were no GK heads at this store to try with the Epifani UL2-212 so any input on whether or not GK heads and Epifani cabs, specifically the UL2-212 match up well would be greatly appreciated. I do fully intend to invest in an Epifani PS600 eventually, however for now I have to pair up a new cab with my GK1001RB-II. I'm currently using my ol' SWR Goliath II, however it is starting to really show it's age as far as "keeping it all together" goes. No big deal as I have driven the heck out of it for a while now. As far as music goes, I play a little of everything gig-wise so versatility is a must. I had a 1001 rbII for a bit and used it with a epi 410UL. The tone was OK but nothing special for my taste. It wasnt bad, just no WOW factor like I get with other gear.
Agreed, do you attribute that to the particular combination or specifically to the head or the cab? GK heads don't really thrill me, I just find that they are very affordable and fairly powerful for the price. It was the head. That epi cab doesnt sond good with all heads but the GK sounded just OK with all the cabs I had at the time (accu, berg, epi, etc). Ive had GK in the past and thought the same thing. I found a new 1001 rbII for $500 out the door so I thought I would try it again. I only kept it for about two months. fwiw, I bought a MB LMII at the same time as the GK and I kept the MB. For the tone Im looking for the MB did everything better including volume. This was over a year ago.
+1 Yep, the Markbass heads are fantastic! I tried a pre-owned series 1 UL-410 with my GK1001RB-II a few months ago and I was very under-whelmed to say the least. On the other hand, my GK head sounds pretty good with my SWR Goliath II cab although it's not inspiring at all. It's becoming a real hassle trying to find a cab that matches this head. I'm all about the used (but not abused) gear. You could pick up the PS600 (or LMII) in the for sale section and use it with the SWR cab until you could sell the GK and get the Epifani cab. Maybe even see an Epi cab come up for sell during that time. Just a thought.
These got on well It was me and the Gk that didnt get on. Compared to my MB head i dint think much of the GK but i did gig it for a couple of months with both the UL212 above or my UL115 and was happy most fo the time. The UL212 above actually came with the S2 drivers but one went a bit funny and so i got them both swapped out for the older B&W's but when the above pic was taken this was a UL2-212
Dave, how is the UL-212 in a band setting? Can you please describe the tone? To be more specific, I am looking for something that would put out close to what a 4x10 does in regards to air movement and volume. Can it do that? I'll get a UL2-410 if I have too, however I really want to get into something a little smaller this time around if I can get away with it. Paul Firt off the UL212 is the same size as the UL410. I have only played a UL410 in a shop but i would say it will be louder than the 410. I find that my UL212 does cut through in a band situation ok but compared to my 1210R its lacking in mids and thats what gets you heard. The UL212 is a full range sounding cab. It can get quite bright with the tweeter just on half but it does seem to sound quite thick in the low end. I use a pick most of the time and i guess that makes it sound a bit thinnner than finger playing. It seems to fatten up nicely when i do use my fingers. Sorry, im not really good at describing sound/tone but i think you might be better off with a UL410 for volume over the Ul212. I do sometimes feel the low end is a bit too much on the UL212 but of course i have EQ to sort that out. But with my 1210R i have no problems getting heard. This i sthe only cab i have owned that makes my guitarist keep asking me to turn down. Im in two bands, both the same sort of line up and gigs. I use aMB head with both but i notice i have th master on 1 or 2 clicks lower when using the 1210R. The small Schoeder cabs are described as having the same output as a 410. maybe you should look at those if you want small. They work very wel in a band situation although on thier own they can leave something to be desired IMO. I love mine though and prefer it over the UL212 as it has the extra kick i need to annoy the rest of the band ;-)
If you don't need the volume of the UL-410, you also might wanna give a listen to the UL-310. I have a Series 1 that I use with a LMII and love the tone and volume. Alot of folks using this rig. It doesn't have the sheer volume of a 410, but it's close and smaller, while weighing only 47lbs. I haven't played Series 2. TBer Vic has both a Series 1 & 2 UL-310 and just got a UL2-410. I think KJung used to run a GII, so he would be another good one to ask.
