Does small gauge wire effect tone?

Trying to eliminate (as much as possible) hum with J single coils.

I purchased from the Bass Parts Resource shielded 2-lead wire to replace the original leads. (Hot and Common rapped with ground and foil)
When the shielded wire arrive I was surprised by the small gauge of the wire–about 1 size smaller than the Bart NTBT preamp factory wire.

Can any explain if the smaller gauge wire will have a negative effect on the overall tone or inhibit the system?

There will be no effect. The signal level is so low that small wire won't be a factor. (It would have to be extremely thin to be a factor.)

That said, the single-coil pickups may still hum. The pickups themselves are affected by nearby electromagnetic fields.
