LONDON (AFP) - Britons are losing their grip on reality, according to a poll out Monday which showed that nearly a quarter think Winston Churchill was a myth while the majority reckon Sherlock Holmes was real.
The survey found that 47 percent thought the 12th century English king Richard the Lionheart was a myth.
And 23 percent thought World War II prime minister Churchill was made up. The same percentage thought Crimean War nurse Florence Nightingale did not actually exist.
Three percent thought Charles Dickens, one of Britain's most famous writers, is a work of fiction himself.
Indian political leader Mahatma Gandhi and Battle of Waterloo victor the Duke of Wellington also appeared in the top 10 of people thought to be myths.
Meanwhile, 58 percent thought Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's fictional detective Holmes actually existed; 33 percent thought the same of W. E. Johns' fictional pilot and adventurer Biggles.

I live in a country where more than 40 % are foreigners and I've heard a lot of stupid, ignorant BS from many people, regardless of their nationality. recently, an italian girl asked me if the US was a member of the European Union. :help:

One of the best that I've heard in France was "There is less unemployment in the US because there is the death penalty".
Logic like that is really a piece of work.

Making them smarter than the Germans and Brits. And while the local Swiss sample is too small to be statistically significant, based on the nature of this thread I'd say it's not looking good there either. :smug:

Four out of Five Americans Know Earth Revolves Around Sun

Probing a more universal measure of knowledge, Gallup also asked the following basic science question, which has been used to indicate the level of public knowledge in two European countries in recent years: “As far as you know, does the earth revolve around the sun or does the sun revolve around the earth?” In the new poll, about four out of five Americans (79%) correctly respond that the earth revolves around the sun, while 18% say it is the other way around. These results are comparable to those found in Germany when a similar question was asked there in 1996; in response to that poll, 74% of Germans gave the correct answer, while 16% thought the sun revolved around the earth, and 10% said they didn’t know. When the question was asked in Great Britain that same year, 67% answered correctly, 19% answered incorrectly, and 14% didn’t know.

  15. Oh trust me, there are some people here who I can't believe are still breathing. However, as the resident super hero, celebrity, political figure, and general representative of my great frozen tundra, I'm forced to accept all my children and move on.

  16. The real tragedy is that those who don't know probably don't care or don't see why it's important.
