so, i've looked many times on this site, and am i just missing something or is there some kind of tube distortion/overdive w/ a clean blend already built into it? please, feel free to shut this down if it has been done already.
Yep Voodoo labs Sparkle Drive! Posted this many times before but... This is an overdrive pedal based on the old vintage TS808 format, it includes the original JRC4558 opamp, but has been modified with metal resistors and polyester capacitors which creates a tighter midrange, a crsiper high, and overall IMHO a far better capacity for note definition than the original TS808 or the re-issue. They have also added a clean boost channel which allows you to blend the clean signal with the overdrive circut. This allows you to boost the direct clean signal which in turn restores the attack and feel which is usually lost in most pedals when the signal is compressed in the ovedrive circut. basically its like layering two amps at once one clean and one saturated. plus if you turn the drive all the way down you get 100% clean boost here is a link to an old review http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=395428&highlight=Sparkle+Drive+overdrive
DHA makes a tube overdrive with a blend built in. http://www.davehallamps.co.uk/Products.html Also the old Guyatone Flip BBX, and most (all?) of the Sansamp line (emulating tubes).
Don't think so Bongo... He makes an active blender that contains a tube but it's not really an overdrive. The overdrive pedals I've seen do not contain a blend.
I've never heard any actual reviews of it with a bass, but Damage Control makes the Liquid Blues overdrive, it has tubes, and the "Clarity" knob sounds like a clean blend in the manual. I'd love someone to be a guinea pig on it
The damage control stuff looks interesting, but a guitarist friend tried one out and hated it. He described it as "too thin" IIRC, which to me says heavy mid scoop or low end loss. Or both I'm pretty sure he tried the Womanizer and Demonizer, so maybe the Liquid Blues would work. Just a heads up is all. EDIT: I do have to admit that the sample titled "Layered" shows promise...
+1 for the Sparkle Drive I picked one up and sent it to Keeley for modding and I'm EXTREMELY happy with it! After the mod, this pedal has much more juice than the original (more than I'll ever use, like on the full wet gain clip below) and has a more open, beefy sound than pre mod. My full review of it is here (currently third down, posted on 6/18/2007): http://reviews.harmony-central.com/reviews/Effects/product/Keeley+Electronics/Sparkledrive+Mod/10/1 Clips, pre-mod: (settings are listed of course ) ----------------------------------------------------------- Light Drive - http://soundclick.com/share?songid=5336555 Full Gain blend - http://soundclick.com/share?songid=5336566 Full wet gain - http://soundclick.com/share?songid=5336573 Clips, post mod: (all clips post mod use the same settings as the corresponding pre mod clips) ----------------------------------------------------------- Light Drive - http://soundclick.com/share?songid=5468396 Full Gain Blend - http://soundclick.com/share?songid=5468410 Full wet gain - http://soundclick.com/share?songid=5468424 and with just a touch of grit - http://soundclick.com/share?songid=5468431 5sg.
