cumbia? just wondering. i play in a "hip-hop/cumbia band"(i.e. ozomatli/. besides being cool, it's a reall cool way to practice chords. i'm really curious if anyone plays this genre.
Hip hop/ cumbia? I cant imagine that. I play in a 6 piece latin band called "Santiago", and we play several cumbias, along with salsa, samba, guaguanco, guajira, bolero and merengue. I believe Bruce Linfield also plays in a similar band, and of course, so does Gard.
Marty, you must learn to never EVER take anything Munji says seriously. I've "known" him for about 5 years (online) now, and he's always trying to rattle cages and pull legs. As for playing a cumbia/hip-hop mix, can't say I have. I have played some cumbia from time to time though. We tend more toward Cuban/Puerto Rican/Brazilian rhythms though. Oh, and Munji, putting that annoying song in my head was reprehensible...and I will have my revenge!! ...it's a small world after all it's a small world after all...
I play in some latin bands and we occasionaly played some Cumbia. I havent done it as much lately as the latin scene in Montreal has slowed down and there aren't that many honest bandleaders in town. A few are run by drug dealers. One very prominant salsa/merengue artist I used to play with still owes me hundreds of dollars in pay. Its a drag the scene is so shady here in town because I love to play salsa!
