Yep, his style is certainly unique and I can see why John McLaughlin used him in his touring band for a time. I had the great pleasure of watching him play for quite a while at my friend's NAMM booth this year, another one of those memories I may really come to treasure if the show morphs into something else now.
Looks like one of Alan's multi coils and from the controls its probably equipped with one of his filters. I wish these NAMM demo vids went a step further and describe the particular instrument in detail. The player has definitely spent years shedding. Was that a short scale?
