double thumbing query

Discussion in 'Technique [BG]' started by stompfrog, Nov 2, 2005.

  1. I have just started practising this technique and was wondering if i should be moving only my thumb up and down...

or bending at the wrist and locking my thumb...

    or moving my whole forearm?

    Whats the generally accepted method?
  2. Hmmm....well, when you use the words 'accepted method' on a bass forum you will soon realize that this phrase applies only once in a great while. The same is true especially with a technique as new and undefined as double thumbing. When I see Victor Wooten double thumbing, he tends to hold his fingers seperate from his thumb as he moves his entire forearm. It kind of looks like a DJ spinning a disc. I double thumb like him if I want to do a run that would be suited to it, but I usually slap down through the string normally, and then come right back up. It is not efficient for repetition but it is quick and powerful if you are doing it just once. Even Victor says something on his website about how everyone has their own technique that works best for them (when talking about just any technique in general).
