Man, i have no idea how you LA or OC people do it. I had to be in Santa Monica for an appt. by noon... I ended up leaving a little after 3:00.... yikes.... It took a LONG time to get back to San Diego. Once i finally reached the 5 south i wasn't so bad. But getting to the 5 south... wow. You guys are soldiers for dealing with that crap. It could've been worse... i could've left at 4:00 or later For those that have to commute through that nonsense... I salute you.
You eventually get used to it (i.e. your spirit is diminished to the point where you drive around zombie-like and you notice the traffic less). Santa Monica to San Diego, pre-rush. I'm gonna guess 3hr 45min.
say it isnt so!! Pretty close! Once I got to the 5 it was gravy.... That whole "10 to the 405 to the 5" thing was pretty brutal.
I lived in SoCal for about 25 years, and got pretty used to it. In fact I worked right at where the 405 and 10 meet. The 10 happens to be the busiest freeway in the world. The 10 actually runs into the 5 south though, so you must have taken the 405 to the 10 to the 5. If you did it the other way around, you went way outta your way. At least you get to drive by Knotts Berry Farm and Disneyland on your way down!
Yeah, you get used to it. Learn to fire your pistol left-handed so you can shoot and drive at the same time.
The 10-to-the-5 and the 10-to-the-405-to-the-5 are pretty much a wash distance wise. The first option takes you through downtown and the second option takes you past LAX so they're both pretty bad. I would've opted for the 10 east to the 110 south to the 105 east the the 605 south to the 91 east then hook up with 5 south in Buena Park. A bit convoluted but would've probably saved you 20-30 minutes.
Huh, I was apparently given a Pollyanna-ish view of LA traffic in this thread.http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f34/you-might-californian-if-982033/index3.html#post14292890
LA to long beach to morongo valley for glass cube drop off on a friday, put a piece of blue tape over the clock in the car, because i didn't even want to think about how long it took
Just came back from visiting my dad out in California (West Covina area). Nope. Never moving there after seeing the traffic.
There's your problem right there Getting in and out of Santa Monica (or west LA in general) is a nightmare - no matter the time, no matter the day
EXACTLY your best bet! the 110, 710, and 105 are great escape routes to avoid the ridiculous traffic My father is in town from Saint Louis; he's staying in Long Beach down by the water. He came to my house and I told him to take the 22e to the 5s. In his infinite wisdom he took the 405 to the 605 to the 91 to the 5! At 5pm. Took him about 2hrs to get there
My all time traffic record was Norwalk to Riverside (45 miles) in FOUR hours! I literally could have ridden a bike faster.
That's nuts gecko. My worst - Van Nuys to Santa Fe Springs at lunchtime during the week. 30 miles.....3 hours
Okay, how's this for torture? I used to live off the 91 and Beach Blvd in Orange County (by Disneyland) and worked in Van Nuys. I used to leave at 6:30 to be at work by 8:00. Took my 2+hours to get home sometimes, and that was back in 1990! Did that for a year! Okay, do I get a number?
Oh, the Valley...that's a whole other kind of animal. I've always been partial to northern escape route via the 118/210. Beats trying to get past Dodger Stadium and downtown by a LONG margin!
