Dumn Pre-amp question

Discussion in 'Basses [BG]' started by sk8terguy316, Mar 8, 2005.

  1. I would like to know do almost all higher-end active basses have pre-amps? Also what's the possible advantage for having a pre-amp on your bass? Thanks alot for all questions

    Do a search...

Pre-amp allows you to change how it soudns (more bass, treble, etc) on your bass so you won't have to go to your amp to change it. Some like passive, some like active - personal choices, and not all higher end have active preamps (some active pickups, some passive)

Preamp gives you active tone control. That is, you can add treble or bass, not just attenuate them. Also increased signal strength improves signal to noise ratio and reduces possible RF and ground hums. Also when turn down the volume on an active bass it does not change the eq the way it does on a passive system. That being said, there are some great sounding passive pickups that produce a certain warmth and in-your-face mid range growl that seems to suffer when a pre amp is introduced into the circut. Hope that helps.
