easier to learn: 6 string guitar or 4 string bass?

    If you feel pain, put the bass down or do something less physically demanding on the bass for a while. Anything that cause pain must be worked up to gradually, or you can injure yourself. You might want to find a teacher, and take at least one or two lessons, just to keep from getting into bad habits.
     
  2. It's also quite possible to cover just the first 3 frets on the lower (headstock end) of the bass when you start out, and once your hand gets more limber, then begin covering all 4. That's what I had to do. It's easier in the long run to eventually cover a four fret area as you won't have to move your hand as much when playing...
