Found a Gibson L7 in the trash today. Easily the most awesome find ever, am I right? Its strung with flatwound strings, I can still tune the thing up and it sounds good. Might be a bit of water damage on the lower bout and the binding is starting to come unglued in places, not to mention rusty hardware. However rusty, everything works good except for the pickup which just produces a loud blaring noise whenever I plug it in. Pics will be up later tonight. Oh yeah, checked the serial number, its a 32.
Well it looks like junk so I don't blame them. I'm having trouble sending pictures from my camera phone to my email, any help?
Holy crap!!!!!!! I'd take it to a luthier who does restorations and see what can be done to make it sparkle again without reducing its value
I called up local vintage guru Mandolin Brothers to see what can be done, they said to bring it in tomorrow. I got one picture uploaded, its not very good, it has poor lighting. Just a body shot. I'm going to take another picture soon, this time with better lighting, in a few minutes. It's in the case I keep my Martin 000-18 in, so it's a tad snug (the case is too big for the martin) but you'll get a good view of the whole thing. I have what I believe to be the original case for this as well though it definitely has water damage and is falling apart, but there is a lot of case candy in here. Including Gibson guitar picks, Gibson Mona-Steel strings (hand made in Kalamazoo!) that come in a hard box (this was before the newfangled packaging we use today) the manual, the polish cloth, the warranty card (which wasn't filled out) a tuning fork, a unopened pack of Martin Guitar strings from the 60s some sheet music, a tiny plastic guitar, and oodles of other junk.
Considering the condition not likely. It looks to me like someone was cleaning out their basement and tossed this out, thinking it junk, not knowing what they had. Looking at the lower bout the wood is really damaged, and I hope it can be replaced or reinforced. The Gibson strap is still on this thing as well, I can't get it off, its rotted in place. Neck is in fantastic shape, straight up and down, truss rod works fine, and its not slanted to the bass or the treble side. Just took a bunch of pics, these came out a lot better. I'm sending them now, and I'll post them as my email account recieves them.
Here's a pic of the neck (EDIT) Again, this isn't the original case, its the case from my Martin 000-18. What I think is its original case is falling apart, so I put it in this one for safe keeping till I take it to the store tomorrow to get fixed.
Here's the strap stuck to something under the guard. I'm afraid to yank at it. Its rotting and is held together with some old electric tape.
Here's the electronics for the bass. Its hanging on a wire connecting directly to the pick up. It has a rhythm button, I'm not sure what it does. It has a volume knob and a tone knob.
Awesome find man, although I've never dealt with them myself I understand The Mandolin Bros. are second to none, please post pics when you get it up and running!!!!
Will you settle for pics when its down and out? They're already here I polished this thing up and the finish warmed up beautifully and a lot of gunk came off. I bought the Mojo Oil thing from MF awhile ago for the cool tin and now I finally found a use for that polish.
