My next rig will be a QSC Ampeg pre rig. I can acquire the pre amp over ebay, but my mom is paranoid that it isn't safe. Is it really unsafe? How many people here have bought amps off of ebay that worked fine, and nothing bad happened. Also for the power amp, I'll be getting one used out of Daddy's. So any buy stuff there, and nothing bad happened?
I bought my huge Ashdown 410 combo on eBay and it arrived w/o any problems other than the box was beaten to hell, and the casters that were promised got lost in shipping, but that is with UPS, not eBay. So I would say go for it, especially since your items will be smaller to ship, and most people on eBay are pretty trustworthy, just check their feedback, and when you get close to a deal, I have found that calling the person can really ease your worries.
I've been ebayed one too many times. Ebay refuses to look into seller abuses, and bid discovery is R.A.M.P.A.N.T. I hate sniping, but with the bid cancellations that plagued my last auction and a couple others by the same guy - it's the only way I'd consider it. I've had enough for now. BassNW wasn't THAT much out of line with what my preamp woulda gone for on ebay, and it arrived in MUCH better condition than Ebay VGC (meaning Vehicular Gross Collision I suppose)
As with anything, it's buyer beware. Only buy from someone with a strong feedback rating. You might want to look here at TalkBass too. You can post an item wanted thread as well. I come across real deals locally from time to time...what's your budget?
Alright, I currently have the high bid for the ampeg svp pro on ebay. I have not yet met the reserve, but if it is more than 350, forget it.
Is it this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2549300927&category=23792 ? That doesn't look like a real recent model. Not sure, but I don't know if you should go for it, unless you really need to save money wherever you can. My guess is that the reserve is probably $300 or $350, and personally if I was in your position I'd just save the extra $150-200 and buy it new. But your view may be different than mine, so it's really up to you.
Bah, that was probably made in the 90's, my friend (redbassman86) had bought a 94 svp off of ebay, and has been very pleased with it, plus my amp I bought used and was made in 95, so I like Ampeg from that era, it's good stuff.
