'54 was the first year they had that one contour. That's why Lull and others replicate that year, rather than a '51.

Back in the early 70's It was rumored that Japan was buying up certain guitars and basses to copy them. "Pan American and Kay are names that come to mind. Some were actually fairly good. The guitarist in the band I was in at the time had a Les Paul copy. He loved it. The bolt on neck was a give away but other than that you could barely tell unless you knew what to look at. I had a early Epiphone short scale ET280 bass. Though it was not a copy of anything, I liked it. I still have that bass.
