Contact the seller and see if you can agree on a BIN price. This is about the only way I will buy something off of ebay. Getting outbid in the last 10 seconds or paying way too much beacuse I want to "win" just isn't my cup of tea.

An ebay "sniper" program is one thing, getting a vasectomy via ebay is worthy of its own thread. ;)

I've successfully used auctionsniper.com. It's not too expensive, it's been reliable, it's easy to use. I've tried others but this one works best for me.

time for me to look dumb... do you have to pay for the use of these sort of things? if so, what's the going rate?

It's a minimum charge per snipe of like 20 cents or something, and beyond that it's a very tiny percentage of the sale price. Last time I used it on like $50 purchase I think the fee was like a dollar or something. It's a very small percentage. Details are on the site.
