I just played a custom built bass (made by some famous polish guy who immigrated to the US, can't think of his name.) It was the sweetest bass I've ever played! The thing that really stood out was the neck was entirely ebony, not just the finger board. It was the smoothest easiest playing neck I've ever felt! Why doesn't anyone else do this? The body was zebra wood, the pickups were custom wound, and had wood pickup covers. It had preset tone buttons, lots of knobs, it was really cool. Only bad thing is it was heavier than a T-40! Now if only I had $5000!

Why noone else does it? You said it, it's heavy, and expensive.

I've played an all ebony bass before. WOW. If I were going to order a custom bass, ebony would be the main neck wood, with strings of flamed maple. I love ebony.
