I'm looking to buy a 550. I have found one new for $789 shipped. Should I buy new or get a used one? If I buy used, what year models should I look for and what is the difference between A, B, and C after the 550? Thanks for the advice, just trying to make the best decision?
You might get some people telling you that only the pre-U.S. Music stuff is good. I don't remember the exact date of the buyout. I heard rumors that their products suffered after the U.S. Music buyout, but as I don't have any experiences with that gear, I can' comment. My WT550 (and my WT400 and WT600) was pre-U.S. Music. Check out the Eden forum as well. Response time there is slower than here because there are just not as many people on that forum, but you MIGHT get a more informed response. I don't think you can go wrong with a used WT550 as long as it is in good shape and has been taken care of. They are built well.
I ended up pulling the trigger on a 550 that was in the classifides. It looks to be in great shape it was rack mounted the life of the amp. It's a 2005 model, so I don't know where that falls in with the buyout. I just know its gonna be a lot better than what I have now.
I don't think your WT-550 was pre-U.S. Music. I dont think any of them are. I had one of the very first WT-550s on order from Gard at Bass Central when Eden's website went down along with all lines of communication. In the hiatus, I decided to go with a WT-800. The WT-550 was not released until after Eden came back under U.S. Music ownership. USM had some QA/QC issues for a while, but I believe their product is back up to snuff now, especially since Eden is now owned by Marshall.
I have this head and it is all that, if you can get a B that's what I have! I get all the punch, and low end I could ever want! IMHO it could use a little more power, but other than that it is a great amp!
Read the instructions on how to set it up, a little goes a long way with the eq settings! I think you will be very happy with this amp.
what became of mr. eden himself? I never heard.... i bought my wt400 way back in 2001 IIRC. looking back wistfully, I think what I blamed on the amp was probably a series of lousy cabs I had and a reluctance to push it to the dirty - the thing defined "High Fidelity" - too clean, too pure was what I thought at the time. it didn't occur to me to buy a half dozen pedals never had a second's worth of trouble with it and got a good price when sold
