Ok, I'm not going to offer these up as poll choices or anything (polls are bad)....

Anyway, I'm curious as to whether the preamp/power amp combo will sound as good as just the straight amp head... I don't know if the power amp would sufficiently color the sound or anything like that. I need to get some stuff straight so that when I finally get ahold of some money and find a good deal, I can pounce on it.

    Thanks again everyone!

Seperate pream and power amp just allows you more flexability to choose the pieces you like. A good power amp should not color your sound.

    I like polls.

I would go for the Carvin DCM1000.
I will never get a Head again that isnt as powerful as a DCM1000 (R1000 does Qualify :D )

    For example:
Why pay for a SVT4PRO? When you can Have a SVP-PRO with a DCM1000 for even less, and sound/work better?

I've heard the Eden preamp with the Carvin amp and I must say that I didn't like it. It sounded a little cold and sterile to me. I heard the Eden preamp with the Eden poweramp and it was MUCH better. I think the WT 800 is the better in terms of tone.

Oh joy, we have differing opinions and I've got no real way to "let my own ears decide."

I've also been looking into an SWR Grand Prix and the DCM1000, but now I'm not even so sure about that. I may have to hold out to see if I can find a used WT800. Thanks for the info!

I have an Eden Navigator preamp run through a Carvin DCM2000, and it sounds fantastic - warm and punchy. It has tons more headroom than the WT-800, which I found to sound very underpowered for its rating.

With the separate power amp, you are going to get TONS more headroom and versatility than with the combo head.

Suggestion: replace the 12ax7 tube in the Navigator with a 5751 - it makes a world of difference.
