Now, I did the search like you're supposed to and I didn't find anything out except that Chrous is a widely used effect. Now, what kind of effect would be good for genre ______?

    For instance, what's useful for:

    Jazz
    Rock
    Power-Metal
    Electronica
    Funk
    "Alternative"
    Punk

    V-Bass.
It covers all of those and more.

    ...

The V-Bass isn't an effect. You don't listen to a song and think "Hm. That's some creative use of V-Bass" or ask if the mixer could put a touch of V-bass on the guitar track to even out the dynamics.

    Ohhhh...I get what you're saying now. :D
From my limited experiences, here's what I've used in different arenas:
Jazz band at school: Compression, Chorus, Flanger
Rock bands: Overdrive, Chorus, Flanger, Tremelo
    Ska / Reggae: Octave
    Punk: nothing
"Techno": everything and anything I could find
Of course, I'll mix em up here and there, depending on what's called for, but that's generally what I carry for each.
