You need an insert cable for the effects loop to work. Basically a TRS to a split TS (send) & TS (receive)

The problem with TRS cables is it's not obvious which is theinput and which is the output. Here is how to trouble shoot the unit.

    1. set up a signal chain of bass > one effect > amp. be sure this works.

    2. set up a signal chain of bass > ToneBone > amp. be sure this works.

    3. Ussing a TRS cable, plug the effect into the 'Bone's effect loop. If it doesn;t work, reverese the TRS in and out.

    4. If it still doesn;t work, you have a defective unit or a defective TRS cable.

A cable like the Hosa STP201 should work - available for like 5 bucks
  5. you do need the TRS, they make that clear up front.

That said, I am still trying to get mine to work 100% in terms of not adding hum and keeping the tone the same.

the effects loop is adding hum to your sound?

Did you try 1 pedal at a time to see if it was specific to something in the loop?
  7. I used the effects loop in my bassbone to activate/bypass my effects for a year or so and didn't have any problems.

There's a very clear picture of the set-up on page 6 of the manual:

The 'insert' cable looks like this:

If the the Bassbone had a separate send and receive for the effects loop it would be a slightly better pedal IMO. The Swiss-Army-knife-like capability is hampered by the need for a specialised cable.
