Electrical buzz on P-Bass

Bass is normally quiet; hands on or off metal parts no noise. BUT . . . if I happen to touch one of the pickup poles it buzzes like crazy. Is this normal? My strat doesn't do this, and I don't remember my Peavy Fury P-Bass copy ever doing it either. This is a brand new American Standard P. Any idea what could be wrong?
