Might sound silly, but I love old and modern funk as well as some hip-hop. My drummer is rock solid and loves playing his high-end electronic kit on occasion. He is also a professional DJ that can scratch (the real deal). We have never considered having him scratch at a gig until now (my idea and he likes it). Maybe use a looper for for drums so he jump up and do a little scratch. There are a couple places we play that have a younger crowd and like to dance, so thought it might be good, but wanted to see if anyone has tried the scratch thing in a not-strictly hip-hop or rap setting? Any helpful thoughts would be appreciated. Regards
Sounds cool to me. I'm kinda thinking about going in the other direction and putting together a live chill hop/trip hop/jazz hop/neo soul kinda thing. C/S, Rev J
I subbed for Mat Maneri's hip-hop [sic] band Inslut a couple times in the 1990s, which featured a turntablist...but rather than scratching beats to sync up with the live drummer, the DJ's role seemed to be more of establishing atmospheres or inserting ear-candy, and so his record crate was full of mid-60s Ornette Coleman, and Elliott Carter string quartets. Very cool; I could definitely see doing more in that vein.
