Elliptical Machines

I'm getting ready to order a Schwinn 418 based on feedback from a neighbor who has one, as well as the Consumer Reports Best Buy rating the Schwinn has received the past couple of years. They're normally around $1,000, but I see that Amazon.com has them now for $649 delivered. It seems fairly sturdy, although it's nowhere near as rugged as the $3,000+ commercial Precor models I've used at the gym.

I've also fournd the reviews at www.ellipticaltrainers.com to be helpful. I'm not sure who sponsors this site and what their angle is, but it seems pretty unbiased.

We picked up a Smooth CE 3.2 last year that we've been pleased with but I checked out the site Atoz recommended and it sounds like there are other brands they would steer you towards instead. I'd spend some time reading reviews there and check a few models out locally if you can. You're spending enough money that you should make sure you get something you'll be happy with and use.

Actually, that machine's rating isn't that bad. Those guys judge really harshly. A 10 might be something that would last 5 or 6 years with 6 hours of use a day by world class athletes. Most machines acceptable for home use rate about 5 or 6.

Whatever happened to these:

Lou,

I am not trying to be a ****, but I am looking for help trying to buy an elliptical machine. Maybe your post was in good humor, maybe not? I cant tell if you are trying to be sarcastic or funny? Basically it comes down to this, if you don't have anything to add to the thread that, my thread or someone else's, don't post it. This way, it is a lot less time consuming and nobody runs the risk of getting offended or pissed off.

BTW, the elliptical is for my girl - she wants it. Besides all she uses at the gym is an elliptical. Your sneakers and 400m track really aren't the ideal place to run in the middle of a Chicago winter. Have you ever ran in 24 inches of snow with a wind chill of -25?

Apparently those Chicago winters make people bitter as well as being bitterly cold. Your picture of the snow made it abundantly clear than running outside was not an option, thank you. A thousand apologies for intruding on your high-strung thread, good sir.

Atoz, that's a very handy link! Thanks!

And I agree - here in Colorado, you don't go jogging in mid-winter unless you're a hard-core wearing crampons. We had 90 days of ice pack more than 2" thick in my neighborhood last winter. And a gym membership is both a lot more expensive and a lot more remote than an elliptical machine downstairs, 20 feet from our big-screen TV. It makes a lot more sense to me to put the gear where we can actually enjoy it.

Also - some of you aren't 57...but your day will come...my feet are cranky enough that I absolutely CANNOT jog. If I jogged a mile, I wouldn't be able to walk the next day. I can walk 9 holes on soft grass, but that's the limit of my range. Elliptical machines are a nice way to get cardio exercise with no impact on my feet. This pisses me off since I used to walk everywhere and jog regularly, but even with prescription orthotics my feet significantly limit my pedestrian activity, and they absolutely prohibit jogging.

+1, I know what you mean. The girl has a L5-S1 vertebrae disc issue. Running would only aggravate that issue.
