    The 40PX is for a 4 string and one needs the P5 for 5ers, correct?

    No. Both soapbars can be used for 5 string. They are in the 5 string 4.0 size

    I'm highly opinionated and extremely self-assured
    It depends. There are two different ways that EMG splits a split coil pickup. One is symmetrical (suitable for even numbers of strings), and one is not (suitable for odd numbers of strings). Fortunately, the EMG documentation is very clear about this. Excerpt below:
