Does that predate the solderless move?

    Yes but it’s new !
You still have to do some soldering with the new design !

    Usually for 5 string
But depending on your bass it can work with a 4 or even with a 6 string.

I'm highly opinionated and extremely self-assured
Sorry, the 40P is not suitable for 5-string. The 40P5 is. The 40P will work for even numbers of strings, but the gap between the coils falls directly in the center of the 40P, making the middle string of a 5-string weak. This is why the 40P5 exists; its coils are suitably offset.

IMG_2405.PNG IMG_2404.PNG Well not according to the emg website ....
They claim the 40P is suitable for 5 strings. I think it depends on the string spacing of the instrument.

That's an error in the blurb. It doesn't matter about string spacing, if your middle string is in the middle, it'll fall right between the magnets and be... not great.

    See the actual manual here.

    http://www.emgpickups.com/media/productfile/4/0/40_bass_0230-0128rb.pdf

and note that the 40p is specifically labelled "narrow 6 strings", and you can also see the differnet magnet arrangement of the 40p5.

BF44FCF2-B70D-4BF0-8A68-74FA18564789. Well It depends on the string spacing of the bass; 5 strings go from 16 to 20 mm spacing . Some Basses even use two EMG p one for the bridge and one for the neck position. Also the location of the bridge and the pickups can affect how much the magnets pickup the sound from each string . I have a Tobias bass that places the bridge asymmetrically , so it's not perfectly centered in the middle of the body (see pic).
The best thing is that you check the string spacing of the bass right under the pickup (assuming the pickup is perfectly centered) that would be the best way to determine if it's going to be optimum for your bass or not .

The spacing really wont' affect this, because the middle string will be in the middle no matter how far apart your strings are, however, if you have a bass where the bridge isn't lined up with the pickups, anything could happen, sure.
