Hi, looking to swap out my stock noiseless fender pups for something more modern sounding. Was thinking about going with the EMG J set but I prefer not to change the knob configuration or lose the active/passive switch and from what I can gather the EMG's come with their quick connect system. So my question, can you install these pups but maintain current knob configuration, volume, pickup selector, bass/treb stack, mid/passive tone stack and active/passive switch? thanks!

No you can't. EMGs require their own low impedance pots.I just got a EMG system with 3 band EQ. LOVE IT. You'll need to rip out all electronics on your Fender.

If I'm not mistaken, the electronics in your bass right now are for passive pickups, which is what the Noiseless pickups you have are. Thus, EMG pickups will probably not work with that circuit you currently have. You can certainly use the quick-connect system you have or install any other preamp that will work with active pickups. If you do that, you have to make sure that you use 25k volume and 25k blend pots with that preamp. This is the impedance value that is required for EMG pickups.

The EMG J pickups will absolutely give you classic, modern, and noiseless J growl. It's a fantastic choice. Also make sure they can easily fit into the current pickup cavities.

Just another comment. The EMGs are more modern.

So if I were to gut the jazz and go with the EMG J set does it even need a preamp anymore?.. and if not does that mean the tone is purely developed by just bass and pickup? If this is true, then adding a preamp and making sure i got 25k pots so the pickups work would increase my tonal options to whatever the preamp now allows me to adjust, correct?

"The preamplifier used inside each EMG Pickup is no ordinary preamp. Built directly into each pickup" starting to understand this, thank you for turning me in right direction fellas.

EMG's are active pickups, so you can't do active/passive switching.

I would recommend DiMarzio Ultra J's for a phenomenal sounding, noise cancelling, modern sounding J pickup.

The 25k pots come with the pickups.the 3 band eq is separate. (Bqs system) total of 4 knobs. Two are stacked. Bass/Treble and Mid freq/boost or cut.
The BQS system is very clean and useful because it allows you to choose from various frequency centers for the treble control. AND, the mid control is sweepable from very low mids to high mids. Just a very clean flexible system that would be a breeze to install and most likely fit in the control cavity of a new Fender.

My plans are to possibly do the same install.

Yes that sounds more like what I'm shooting for, I just ordered the j set and a new three hole control plate cover that i may be able to return if I go with the BQS system shortly here after.. the j set plus my sansamp should hold me over for this recording session since the single song we are doing for Relix Magazine requires a very basic full tone.. I think even a pbass may be appropriate for the song..which I am going to try to borrow one from a friend. However, the BQS sounds more like what I am ultimately shooting for in the future so thank you for turning me on to that!

no problem. I ran the EMG J pickups with the standard included 25K pots, (vol, vol, tone) The EMG's in that basic configuration sound full punchy and very full range. Clear full lows and sparkling highs. The mids seemed a little scooped to me which is why I decided to get the BQC system. Hope they work well for you.

+1. The BQC system with the EMG J are a perfect match. Your bass will absolutely be killer!

Nordstrand NJ5fs pickups with a three band preamp. Hazuse!

I just installed this combo in my Am Dlx J V. Took out the SCN's and stock preamp.
The Nordy Fender replacement pickups sound Fenderish but stronger in passive mode. In active mode you can really sculpt the tone you're looking for. And QUIET. You can get as modern as needed and still get back very close to a Fender.

I'm usually not looking to change my tone a lot, but these pickups and pre will take you just about anywhere you want to go. I like to get a geat default tone and maybe one other tonal option. I can do a lot of my tone changes with my hands and pick. The Nordy pickups and pre are real quality products.

Nordstrand makes quality gear for sure. I had a pair of NJ5F single coils in my Fender V'er ripped out the preamp and went totally passive and that bass barked.

Just for kicks I put some NJ5F 5's in my mia dlx J V, with a Nordy 2 band and passive mode. Here's the thing.

I have a Maple board on my 04 dlx j v. I've always pefered a Rosewood board but this bass is just sooo nice. I'm just not a
fan of that upper mid "cank" thing I've been getting with the stock SCN's. Hard to eq it out.
I put the Nordy NJ5F's in the bass and boom!! Now there's this nice punchy low mid and NO upper mid "cank". I'm loving this set up. Running most every amp I use flat just cause it doesn't need eq. Love this set up. I'll have to post a proper review.
