Hey all I have a bit of a question that I can't find much light to. I am looking for a new passive pickup set and am planning on buying an EMG set. I went on Musicians Friend and found two models that both look decent, but I can't tell what the difference is between them. I found the EMG JAX set for $179.00 and the JHZ for $99.00. Is there really difference in sound between them? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, -Dom

EMG JAX is an active pickup and the HZ is passive. Buy the HZ set if you want passive. I have heard only good things about the x series though.

Do you recommend any good passives besides the JHZ?

I have nordstrand set on one of my basses and they sound good. Seymour duncan hasn't failed me either.

The EMG HZ's aren't bad pickups either, they just aren't "real" EMG's but I prefer them to a lot of other passive options too because you don't have to worry about string spacing like you do with pole pieces. Very neutral sound and work well with preamps too.

I can't recommend the JAX highly enough.

They are phenomenal. I also like the JX too for a bit more edge.

yes, i recommend any good passive pickup besides the JHZ ;)

they're OK, but other stuff is better without being all that much more expensive.

if the goal here is J pickups with no hum when solo'ed, the dimarzio ones are far and away better.

(real EMG active stuff is a different matter, that's top-notch gear, especially their new upgraded "X" versions.)
