Does anyone have any experience using emg preamp circuits with non-emg passive pickups? The website says that this is doable, but I've never heard a bass with that combo. Right now I'm building a bass with 2 MM-style pickups (one Lane Poor, one Basslines) and I was going to use a Bartolini pre-amp, but was looking to see if the EMG setup might be better. Thanks.
Yes I did that. I had a Fender MB-5 with passive pups that was wired as vol-pan-tone and put an EMG BTC (concentric bass & treble) in place of the tone pot. IIRC, all I had to do was snip a couple of wires the volume pot, wire in the BTC and a new jack, and away I went. Sounded terrific I thought. The reason for the TRS jack is that it acts as a power switch when you plug in an instrument cable. Very doable, quite simple and IMHO gives you way more good tones. BT
