I've done alot of searching on here but only came up with alittle information. Has anyone used one these in their cabs? I was thinking of trying one in my avatar b210 cabs. Any other good high-pass filters or drop-in units?
This was successful for mua: high pass 4K (by eminence) on a circuit board $19.95, installed inside the cabinet, with a 50 watt L-pad $ ?? installed on the existing jack plate. $0.00 (I removed the 1/4" input jack to make room for the attentuator) I have installed the drop in "cabinet ready" crossovers made by Eminence before. I got mine from Orange County Speaker repair in California. (speakerrepair.com ??) The neat feature was having 2 choices of cross-over points!...my choice was the 2.5K / 5K version. They make others as well. A bit pricey=$75.00-$80.00 but for a quality product with no messing around, can't go too wrong.
Im looking to get a more consistant sound from tweeter to woofer. The board only costs $20. That is about the same as the parts for the "lovethatbass" x-over. Would his sound that much better?
Lovethatbass did a 3rd order crossover for his Avatar prior to his 4th order and liked the 4th order a lot better. The PXB has the advantage of the lamp, but you can get the lamp separately and add it to any crossover/tweeter. I'd go to the horses mouth and get lovethatbass's opinion. As to the price, I thought you planned on the full crossover, not just the HP filter. I'd go just high pass, as the woofers are into acoustic roll off at 3.5 kHz anyway, and don't really need additional electrical roll off.
I put one of the Eminence pxb-3K5 in my 410 NEO.I also changed the Foster tweeter to a Sellenium horn and compression driver so I haven't heard it with the Foster.I don't hear any distortion from my high end no matter how loud I play although I don't play ear bleeding loud.Eden,SWR and Peavey all have used 18 db,3500 hz high pass for their tweeters so it should work well with the stock foster. The 4th order Lovethatbass builds would be a step up but the Eminence works fine too.
Thanks for the input. I just wanted a pre-made unit that I could hook up without any extra hassles......even though it would have been easy to build the 4th order. This one should work very well and blow the old 6db out of the water! What I really want is a bergantino crossover but I am sure they would be very expensive. I'll everyone updated. I have an avalon vt-737sp arriving soon. The pre and cabs will get a good workout.
I just got done installing and testing one of my Avatar B210 cabs with the Eminence crossover. It sounds like a totally different cab now! The sound is very similar to eden cabs except that the bottom end is not quite as big (xlt model not the compact 210 cab) Actually, it sounds alot like the eden compact 210 which I love. This one just happens to cost about a third of what the eden does. I now get the cutting mid range of the eminence 10's and the top end sound that the ampeg 8x10 cabs have. I may now actually see a reason to have tweeters! It's all in the crossover I guess.
In the hi-fi world very often all that separates a $500 speaker from a $5,000 speaker is the quality of the crossover.
The XLT does not have a big bottom at all. The XLT has a big mid-bass, which is a full octave up from the bottom. The last D410-XLT I had on the test bench had a huge hump in the midbass due to big speakers stuffed into a small cabinet. This is common commercial practice, and gives the illusion of a big bottom. This is the classic Eden "cut-through" which makes it well heard in a noisy mix. I've not measured the Avatar, so cannot comment on lack of bottom. If the XLT is more sensitive (louder), your ear will be easily fooled into thinking it has a bigger bottom. Listening tests have to be done with both cabs at identical loudness levels. I'd pick 82 Hz as the reference frequency, as this is the 2nd harmonic of a 4-string bass, and the power region where you should expect your rig to fully deliver. With both cab outputs identical at 82 Hz, an A/B comparison should reveal the tone differences in the power region.
Cool beans, glad it worked for you too.I modded a couple of 112 floor monitors with the Foster horn and single cap crossover from my old Avatar CB 112s and they work all right but aren't real smooth. This thread got me thinking maybe It would help the high end if I put these crossovers in the monitors so I ordered a pair this morning. Thanks for the brain jog,we'll see how they do.
