Can't get past the annoying one-volume-level kick sample.

  3. one bass track runned through different rigs. I'd bet one of them is a guitar amp.

From what I know about metal bass recording that is really common. The top end distortion helps the bass blend in more with the distorted guitars.

    It's called reamping.

Is this a recording from the mid 90s ('93-'94)?

Probably a device similar to the Reamp:

    Reamp_prototype.

    Radial makes these, now.

Kick sounds like a triggered Alesis D4 - common in the early 90s.
