Engraving pickguards

I am in the process of making 2 basses. one is a P bass knockoff "parts bass" and I have a 3 ply pickguard (white-black-white) that I woud like to carve into with my dremel and I was wondering if anyone had seen this done or done it themselves and could give me some tips as how to go about it.
I will document the process and post when done.

P.S. the other bass is one that I've designed the body with a flame maple top and a maple back that I hope to fashion into a P/J.
