Not sure if it happens to any of you other folks but for the past year when I have been playing some kind of jam session in Chicago and the other musicians do not know me they always request to hear the Seinfeld theme. The few times I was fine with it but after the hundredth time to play it is enough to make my head explode. If I don't play that one then the other request is 'Higher Ground' - the RHCP version. FML.

What do you do when these requests come up during your sessions?

I must live a very sheltered musicians life.
I've never been asked to play Seinfeld theme or Higher Ground nor do I know or even want to know how to play them.
The usual request I get is, "Here's our set list, can you play them?"

Wow. Never happened to me. And that tune wasn't even played on bass, it's a synth. Go figure.

I have never been asked for either.
    My response would be
    Homie don't play that!

Just lay into the Barney Miller theme song. The older folks may get a chuckle. Given that I haven't seen it anywhere in reruns in decades, the younger ones won't have a clue. Be sure to bring your horn section...

In a band far, far away many, many years ago, we used to play the Barney Miller theme along with the theme from "Taxi".

  11. I've had that happen too many times. My response is always "actually, that wasn't played on a bass."

Nobody wants to hear "Seinfeld", they just want to hear a two bar descending slap line. I play a two bar descending slap line and move on.

Completely irrelevant to the thread but the one TV tune I love playing is Hill St Blues.

The hat trick would be to play it, but wearing only three socks...;).

I was just playing it last night. One of the best TV themes ever IMO.

I used to play in a band when, on slow nights, we used to do " Stump The Band " set, where we would ask the meager audience to yell out a TV theme song, and we would try to play it. It was a 8 piece band, and most of us had watched enough TV to remember them, but, trying to play them for the first time was always crazy. Most of the time, the horn players would know them, and play about a minute's worth. But, Barney Miller theme came up most of the time, followed close by Bonanza, and Sandford and Son themes. Never got asked to do the Seinfeld theme, although at one point, the singer asked me to play the little musical intervals in between scenes, after he announced the next song. I explained it was a synth doing that, and then, he asked the keyboard player who flat out refused. Ahh, the Glory Days !
