Epifani Ul 501 or Epifani Piccolo 600

Discussion in 'Amps and Cabs [BG]' started by Uros0466, Jul 23, 2012.

  1. Which amp is more versatile, more allround amp?
What are the tonal, voicing differences beetwen these two amps?

I checked both of these out at the last NAMM shows. Both are similar with some different features. I really liked them both and would have a hard time choosing. I'm also very interested in seeing opinions.

  3. Anyone else has an opinion about these two?

501 for the reasons stated above. Killer amp.

I tried both. Flipped the 501 I had for a week. Something about that head is really really cool. Something about that head is also a little strange. The Piccalo is very nice, but similar to the 501, with less power. When it comes to EQ, I'm a control freak and I can't get my freak on with either of those two heads. But set relatively flat they sound damn good. I just prefer the zillion semi-parametric filters multiple pre=amps and espresso maker in the Benz SM 9.2

Something about the shape of the mids was a little off for me, a semi parametric mid would be more useful (in my opinion) than that mid scoop feature. I always prefer a user definable midrange control in general. Also, the power section of that amp is AB. I've been accustomed to the solid super quick punch of the Class D Markbass F500, which seems to have tighter more focused lows. The lows on the 501 are bigger and looser around the waist band compared to the F1/F500. Ken Jung has also tried these same heads and has made similar observations which I agree with, you might search around for those discussions.

Are there more people with these amps? What do you have to say?

  13. Hi from Italy, I have an Ul501 and I'm very happy. Sure it's a clean amp, in a kind of hi-fi mode. The mid control is useful. The eq section seems to be very musical.
I've used Mesa Walkabout, built like a tank but too much rock oriented to me, MarkBass Little Mark III, nor bad, but Ul501 beats Mesa and Markbass, mainly for its sonic character.
A bit pricey, yes, here in Italy, but a very good amp.

    Ciao

I personally like the UL501 better. The Piccolo sounds too retro to me. It has an added warmth and vintage sound that I don't really care for.
