I'm watching BET Jazz while finishing up a song I'm writng, and they air a Kirk Whalum concert. Halfway through he says, "I wanna bring out someone special, my 18 year old son. We're going to do a song he wrote called 'Seasons'." I figure it would be some little ditty, but nothing too special. His son comes out and straps on a Ken Smith 5, and plays some of the most melodic lead basslines! So much for judging the book by the cover, eh? He did a nice solo that utilized about 4 techniques, but, IMO, he struggled a teeny bit during the slap section, but you can tell that he was good. ANYTHING can go wrong when you're live. I was impressed by the young squire.
Woodchuck, You wanna hear a really weird coincidence? Yesterday evening (7/15/03, 4:45pm our ATL time zone) I was talking to a co-worker that got hired here with in the last 3 month's or so. We were chatting about music, cause she saw a David Fiuczynski flyer for a Apache cafe gig hanging on my desk/cube-wall. Mentioned that I'm doing a gig at the Apache this Saturday (the 19th, *plug*)... She asked me what I play... "Bass!?!, my brother plays bass.... and actually My father plays Sax" (you might know where this is going)... This was yesterday 'Chuck! She lives in the Atlanta Area, and her name is Courtney Whalum.
Actually man, here is what I got back from her: -----Original Message----- From: Whalum, Courtney Sent: Wednesday, July 16, 2003 2:27 PM To: Swann, Jairaj Subject: RE: your brother Yeah, Hes 19 now and he was on BET with my dad. He did write the song Seasons on my dads cd too. His name is Kyle and hes really taking off. Hes been on tour with Stacie Oricco for the past year and before that he was on tour with a gospel artist Nicole Mullen. *ya mite wanna change the title...
No Joke man, she just past me on the way to the break room... She is real cool. I just think that it is a coincidence that you mentioned this, the day after I found out Courtney's Dad is Kirk Whalum. She's here in ATL... I'm trying to get her to come out to the Apache to see my acid-Jazz group gig, this Saturday... I gave her a Demo CD yesterday...
11:30pm (Adams Township goes on at 10pm), it's right off of 75/85... ya know, b'hind The Varsity (old Ying yiang)... It would be great to see you. Had I not had something Friday I would be coming back from NAMM Nash-Vegas too! Lucky you.
