are these decent strings for rock and metal type music when playing with a pick? i dont want the "twangy" sounding strings. a friend told me that all new strings are twangy til they break in. is that true?

YES!!! your friend is right new strings are twangier then used strings.
Your friend sounds like he really is an advanced bass player and knows a lot.

  3. I mostly stick to nickel roundwounds as well. Not too twangy at all. GHS Boomers are also good. Warm and mellow right out of the box.
