I just uploaded this album to my iCloud. The future of bass guitar is in gifted hands! Spalding truly sounds like electric is her first instrument now (I would be shocked if she doesn't produce another acoustic project sometime soon.) she is killing on five too.

Wow, I just listened to a couple of songs live on youtube and I'll get the album for sure. Dr. recommended.

Like someone said on another thread, her voice is not ideal for rock, but the music is really adventurous. Since no one really makes a ton off of recordings anymore, I am glad she is definitely art first!

"Funk the Fear," is a cut I definitely recommend. It sounds like she is killin' a P with flats, but I think it is the neck pickup on her Jazz. The song has a killer riff, and her tone is just powerful. Not that she was bad, but Esperanza must have a lot of time shedding.

OK...some of that angular riffing reminds me of the Screaming Headless Torsos.
In my world, that's a good thing.

Nice write-up in the new Bass Player (April 2016).
    ...she's on the cover.

Esperanza is great at making a fretless sound fretted. She almost makes it sound grindy at times. She really went to the woodshed on electric. She sounds like it is her first instrument now. As much as I loved her electric playing, she really used to sound like double bassist on electric bass. She is getting up into Tony Levin territory now.

…funny. 'Cause I always thought Jeff Berlin made a fretted sounded fretless.

  12. Got tickets to see her next month. I just read a good review of the album where they said she's like Joni Mitchell and Jaco in one person.

There is one song on the album where she does sound like Joni Mitchell. She even sounds a bit like Jaco on one track too. Generally speaking, she sounds completely different from Jaco, but I understand the point the critic is making.

She is nothing like the last time I saw her. Different style of music, different bass, different hair.

I find this much more interesting than her previous straight up jazz.

I miss her old hair though.

It's funny, I think I need to get the old album and listen to it without watching these videos. The whole new look she's working isn't bad or anything, but it's such a huge change it's distracting from trying to register what she's doing musically.

    EDIT: new album, sorry.

She basically doing a Bowie style project where she has become a different character. That is why she is all electric now.
