when you pick up your bass and for some reason things just start moving real nice? I've been playing for about 10 years now, and I wouldn't say that fact reflects in any way my playing ability. I should be way better than I am. However, for some reason every couple years I have these wonderful breakthroughs where I pick up my bass and have an intense 30-45 minute stretch where everything just falls into place and I play like butter. Just improvisation, or some riffs I have been practicing forever. Something inside my hands clicks and I start grooving and man it feels great. Like someone flipped a switch or something.

Yes, I have had those moments. Funny thing is, a lot of them have been recorded, and when I listen back to the recordings, I don't sound much (if any) different than normal. In my case, anyway, it's more a matter of being in the moment, subjectively, than a quantum leap in capability. That doesn't make it any the less real, though.

Good point. I really should start recording myself when practicing.
