I'm wondering if anyone can suggest songs that were recorded on a fretless that don't have it as a main voice. Not looking or jaco type stuff. I've been wondering why someone would want a fretless in a non-jazz/solo setting when they could just use a fretted.
Pino palladino on Paul young's "Every time you go away"- possibly my favorite fretless line ever... Pino kills on this one.
"King of Pain" by The Police (Sting playing). I believe this was an electric upright: "Standing On The Corner Of The Third World", by Tears For Fears (Pino playing): Theme from "Northern Exposure" by David Schwartz (David Schwartz playing):
And a quick search revealed these: What are some good fretless bass songs. which linked to: Fretless guitar - Wikipedia and Fretless rock bassist ?
Pino is on New York Minute (Don Henley). Whoever played bass on Mama, I'm Coming Home (Ozzy) Thanks- I didn't know that. Always thought it was just a really growly Jazz bass or T-40
Lots of The Band's stuff Rick Danko played fretless, mostly an Ampeg scroll-head bass I believe. A lot of classic Rolling Stones stuff was recorded on fretless, which kind of blew my mind when I read about Bill Wyman's basses and how he modified them.
Peter Gabriel "Sledgehammer" features Tony Levin on a Stingray Fretless laying down the groove. He's also playing with a pick. There is some great bass playing on that whole album titled "So"
Don Henley - Boys of Summer (Pino on fretless); Pink Floyd - Hey You (David Gilmore on fretless?); Japan - Cantonese Boy (Mick Karn on fretless)
