Examples of playing on this?

I’m not sure what words to use to describe the wood platform on top of this guy’s bass. He presumably uses it to play percussion, but I haven’t seen it done. The screenshot is from an old Grandpa Jones video (please excuse the terrible quality).

Will someone please link me to an example of someone playing this contraption and/or explain more about it? Thanks.
