excied,but patient,learning basics

I was playing the accordian[ 12 bass] when i overheard the group leader say,we need more bass players to fill in the spots where someone needs a break. My reply,was I could try that! Allmost a year later and some equipment in my room, i'm up to the point of scales and transcribing. I know how to read music,in cords,pipe music, and accordian. Don''t have the finances to get a teacher, so cd's and some hands on help from friends is great. I'm teaching my ears,eyes, and of course fingers, all together, and sometimes seprate. Any advice on where to go from here?
