French bass labeled "Fait par F. Claudot Mirecourt 1861". Also has a worn part of another label "J.R. Lafleur & Son, Music Publishers & Instrument Makers, 25 Green Street, Leicester Square". I bought the bass in London, England, where it has spent most of the 20th c. Mensur 42", upper bout 22 1/8", lower bout 26 3/4". This is a big, responsive bass in excellent condition with a strong, even, projecting tone, more like an English bass. Interestingly, in the past, the original neck was spliced from the back button to around 1/2 position, and a wooden shim inserted to widen it and accomodate a 4th string. I added a chromatic C-extension. I used it in Europe where it has helped me win orchestral positions. Asking $25,000 US, located in Montreal, Canada.
