I am looking to possibly trade my L-2500 for something a bit different. I have been playing country for the past few years, and will now be in a country house band for the foreseeable future, and the G&L is a bit too aggressive for what I’m playing these days. There are, of course, settings that could be appropriate for country with the very versatile G&L preamp, but I have a jazz and p-bass, both of which I prefer with my current project.

I purchased it used in early 2011, and only played it for two shows and once at church. Since then I have only kept it as a backup bass. If I had the money to keep it and still pick up some other basses I’m interested in I would, but I don’t. So I thought I would ask and see if there is any interest in the bass, and see what else might be out there.

This is not your normal, everyday 2500. This is a 2001 L-2500 made specially for the 2001 NAMM show. You know the companies always show off their best-of-the-best for NAMM, and this is no exception. It has an ash body with a gorgeous tobacco burst finish and matching headstock, a 2-piece maple neck, and a rosewood fretboard with no dots on the front (but there are dots on the side). It is equipped with standard G&L wall-shaking electronics, and comes with a G&L hardshell case.

Tone-wise, it has that typical gnarly, snarly G&L tone. With its 34” scale, and the option to string through the body, the B string is nice and focused. The controls are volume, bass, and treble, with switches for pickup selection (neck/bridge/both), series/parallel, and passive/active/active with treble boost preamp settings. With all of the different tone/pickup configurations at your fingertips, this is a very versatile bass. It can sound like a passive P-bass with the neck pickup solo’d in passive mode, like a stingray with the bridge pickup solo’d in active mode, or like a killer rock bass with both pickups in series and active mode. I find it sounds best to my ears in active, series, with the pickup height set a bit lower than factory specs. But of course it depends what kind of sound you’re looking for. The bass has a very full tone with a strong mid-range presence to really help you bite and cut through the mix.

The bass has been well cared for and sparingly used. It could almost pass for a new bass. Every time I played it (literally), I get compliments on the look and sound of the bass. There are a few tiny dings in the upper radius, but no buckle rash. You have to look hard to find any imperfections. It will come with a G&L hardshell case that is also in excellent condition. Weight is approximately 9.7lbs on the bathroom scale.

I am not looking to sell the bass. A new basic G&L 2500 runs approx $1,389 (Rocket Music) up to $1,875 (musiciansfriend.com) for one with a quilt top. But this is a one-of-a-kind bass that you just won’t find anywhere else. And it’s gorgeous. I would put the trade value around $1,200.
As for trades, here is what I am interested in (in order of preference), +/- cash depending on the bass and its condition:

    1) Lakland 55-02 Deluxe w/Rosewood board
    2) Lakland Darryl Jones 5-string
    3) Sadowsky Modern 5 with maple or rosewood
    4) Elrick Expat 5
    5) A good 5-string P/J bass
    6) Musicman Stingray 5 with 3-band eq and maple fretboard
    7) Any other 5-string, 35” scale, rosewood fingerboard (or any other dark wood, just not maple), except a Fender, unless it’s custom shop. I’m open to suggestions.

I have attached a few pics that were taken when I purchased the bass initially. I’ll take some more current pics in the next couple of days, if there is any interest in the bass.

Feel free to PM me with trade interests. Thanks!

I have about a 97 sr 5 h w maple board and solid metallic blue finish and tort pickguard.
It is in great shape except for a small crack at the very end of the fingerboar which I had proffesionally repaired

I have received a few offers, which I appreciate. But just to clarify, I am only interested in 5-string basses. Thanks.

I looked the bass over very closely. There is no major damage, just a few nicks in the finish here and there. What you'd expect on an 11 year old bass. I tried to highlight a few of them in the pics.

Playing this again reminded me of just how much I love it. It sounds great even unplugged. Very resonant. It's just not the right sound for me right now and it's not getting played, but I'm not in any hurry to trade it unless it's for the right bass.

Feel free to send any offers my way.

Possible trade pending in the next day or two, but it's not for one of the ones on my list. Thought I'd give it one more bump to see if someone has one of the Lakland basses I really want and is interested in trading.

No thanks. Not really into fretless basses. But thanks for the offer.
