Hi Guys Got a bit of a dilemma here, a guy offering me a swap for my vintage v4 p bass. Basically he's offered me what he says is a SUB ray 4 bass with a musicman logo, and is very (almost too desperate) insistent on swapping. To the point he also offered me a zoom b2 pedal when I was considering the offer. The only thing is, this SUB strikes me as a fake. Here are the pics he's sent me. From what I can see, it doesn't have the thumbwheel adjuster at the heel of the neck, the pickguard screws are in the wrong places, the string tree is too far over the the treble side of the neck and appears to be "pulling" the A strong out of line, and the 21st fret marker appears to be missing. This may be an earlier one, but I'm no expert. So that's where you come in! Fake or not fake? I' going with my gut and saying fake as I haven't seen one like this before, he claims it's a 2016 bass but just doesn't ring true. Let me know what you think! Cheers.
It’s no good... besides those Vintage instruments play really nice..keep what you have. If you want a ray, save up for it. You’d be surprised even $40 a month will get you there sooner than you think.
It's not that I want a ray at all, I'm more a guy for just swapping for odd instruments! But I would never touch a copied ray or anything from evilbay or one of those Chinese wholesalers sites, a SUB would be great but for me the only bass I would save up for at this point is another 74 ric like mine! Aye the vintages are nice, mines had a full nitro refurb in aged white, matching headstock, fender mex pickup, and a set of roto flats. Brilliant basses for the money!
Can anyone confirm whether this bass is a fake or not as a 2nd opinion? I'm 85% certain it is, but I'm really not sure as I'm no expert on musicman/sub gear!
Ugh...the strings on that retention button... It’s not a fake SUB...it’s a fake Stingray; so fake that it looks like a fake SUB.
It's totally fake! The headstock isn't even the right shape (it almost looks more like a regular Fender style blank, that has been re-shaped before it was drilled - the machine heads are way too spread out). Obviously the headstock decals are completely wrong, even for a Stingray, let alone a SUB. There haven't been bullet truss rods, on Music Man instruments, since about 1990. Steer clear.
FAKE! No wheel truss rod adjuster at bottom of neck. Adjuster hole in top of the neck. Not the Stingray way. That logo looks horrid and amateurish! String tree in wrong spot. Keep your bass.
The body is a Sub ray4 or SB4 import from sterling. As the bridge is the thin metal stamped bridges that are found on the $299 sterling Sub Ray4 or SB4. Same goes for the control plate 2 band EQ with volume. I bet if you look under the plate you'll find a small preamp wired to the pots. The neck looks like a import replacement with a fake decal, and the frets look real thin like the ones you find on $99 imports. Thus, not a real Sub ray from the early days, but more a parts bass with various era import parts.
I think its a AliExpress crappy, oh sorry I meant copy! The logo is not even right No Pinwheel truss adjustment at the headstock I think I have actually seen one like this on AliExpress to tell te truth
Someone trying to rip people off with a counterfeit bass? Impossible! All the TB members insisisting that fake basses are harmless can’t be wrong.
They are harmless, it's the people trying to pass them off as real who are the problem and cause the harm.
I have a SBMM sub with a bent neck I’m thinking about dropping off at goodwill. Can’t play anything above the 9th fret without it deadening on the frets.
