Went to Sam ash today. Played the most awesome neck my hands have ever touched!!! It is advertised as a Vox bass from late 60's. I had never played a neck so thin! So smooth! Headstock said Vox and on the back of the headstock it said made in Italy. But the body doesn't seem right to me. Kind of homemade. Starting to come apart at the seams. Pickup doesn't look like anything I have ever seen on a old Vox either. They want 300 for it. And I thought long and hard about it just because of loving the neck so much. But I just can't get by the fact I think its a fake. Oh and it had vintage U.S.A grover tuners! Did I do right? It's killing me I didn't bring it home! View attachment 262447
The pickup looks like a Vox, but that body definitely isn't. if you really liked it, I advise to grab it before another guy does.
I don't know if it's actually a fake as much as it has been hacked up. It almost looks like a Vox Panther that someone stripped and sawed the body. The neck is right, the pickup is right, the knobs are right and the pickguard looks "almost" right. I think all of it is actual Vox though.
Well, I'm a Vox lover, so I'm biased towards it. Just go with your gut. And the body is could be real, just not an original shape. It looks a lot like a modified Panther shape. T he rest looks pretty good, including the bridge. And the Pantheris from the middle of Vox's range, I'd consider just the neck and pickup worth 225.
Maybe it's a reworked Clubman, Panther ect.....neck looks right but with bigger/replaced tuners...bridge looks similar...the body could have been cut down a bit around the horns to look more like a Precision style...sanded and clear coated. What did the neck pocket look like? A nice tight factory fit or kinda amatuerish? I would think you could score a real-unmolested 60's Clubman for not a whole lot more money if you keep a lookout on ebay cl. ect.
Neck pocket didnt look bad. Not the best i have ever seen. Biggest problem with the body is it is coming apart it is a 3 piece body and both wings are seperating! Also the body was very heavy for its size? Sounds like it might have been worth it. Vox neck, Vox parts, and Grover tuners.
