Fanned Fret Bass Besides Dingwall/LeCompte?

Discussion in 'Basses [BG]' started by nonfatmatt, Aug 24, 2007.

  1. On Wednesday I went out to Bass and Beyond in Rancho Cordova, CA (great store, btw, if you get a chance). I had had some problems finding a bass that really played right to me and finally got a chance to sit down with a Dingwall Afterburner 6. The fanned frets totally changed the way I looked at bass, as I had had some real ergonomic problems with the way I was playing. However the afterburner is out of my budget a bit so I was wondering if there was a bass that had the same system that was in the $1500 or so range. I did see the LeCompte model but those are around 2300 or so, and the Dingwall was 2700.

I am playing a fan 9-string now and he will be starting a fan 10-string for me this Fall.

Look for an afterburner on the used market. I've seen them in the $1500-1800 range. They are rare, though.

You'll definately be looking at the used market for that price range.

Save your money and watch Ebay and TB classifieds like a hawk. You won't find anything else that plays like a Dingwall.

  8. conventional? Charlie Hunter's 8-strings aren't exactly "conventional"...

Charlie Hunter's guitars are not conventional. The basses on the other hand are on the conventional side IMHO. Esp the retrofit bass necks

Go with the Dingwall...why pick a builder who has little or no experience with the ins and outs of fanned frets when you can have one built by the man who deals with them every day?

    Experience does count for something.

  13. CB, Conklin, and Stambaugh are the ones I'd go with.
